The Terracotta Army is a grand expression of Qin Shihuang's desire to defeat death. With his life-size army surrounding his tomb, he is surely safe and secure in the afterlife. These soldiers are an impressive force, meant to yield power and protection. Their faces are stoic and their stances are dominating, but the combination of both quantity and quality is what truly astonishes me.
Burial sculptures began to replace the need for human sacrifices during this dynasty, making these sculptures all the more powerful.
I wonder what type of system was designed to create these. Was it factory-style with one person working on a specific area? Were the cast pieces? Was it a group of artists that each created their own style?
